We get a mid-range kibble (no Solid Gold for them unless we get some too!). Most of the time I cook up a batch of canned fish, add some flaxseed and lots of veggies, maybe dissolve in some glucosamine and vitamin C, and stir a spoonful of that into each meal. Basically, I wouldn't want them to live on my cooking, but do want to make sure they're getting the stuff that maybe doesn't survive kibble-baking temperatures, like essential fats and heat-labile vitamins. They seem to be thriving.
ReplyDeletegreat!! like Tony the tiger would say! YOu may wan to ad in some cereal and fruit too and som dairy like cheese. I alteranate with he frui groups daily and my dog is on RAchel RAy's meat and vegie formulas called 'Nutrish"! Is excellent and very affordable at 16 lb bag, i think..don't quote me maybe 14 lbs? at $13 at Price Chopper near me. it usually goes for $ 16. and i get the coupon in the circular weekly for $2. off! so i pay just $11. for quality food cooked by a cook on tv, well...maybe she didn't make it herself but..she endorses it and it is naturally preserved with rosemary extract, no fillers or by-product,,artificial flavorings or colorings. you get alot of BANG! not BAM! like the other cook says 'Emeril', for your proverbial buck!
ReplyDeleteThey get frozen blueberries, or part of a bruised apple or pear, thrown in pretty often, and their new favorite treat involves dried chicken and banana chips. In season, the bruised-fruit thing is sometimes a peach or nectarine, which delights them. I train with lowfat cheese, so that dairy thing is totally covered! We also have the rule at my house that if the dog is lying down and being good, and only then, the dog may have a treat from the table. Maybe. That's good for some chicken or beef tidbits now and again. It also keeps the heads off the dinnerplates.
ReplyDeleteAnd this doesn't even get into the sprinkle of parsley, ginger, etc. to keep the breath nice and try to stave off GSD myelopathy in the senior citizens...
I got into all this when Shepherd #4 developed cancer and nobody could figure out what it was, never mind what to do about it. Turned out she had a well-hidden nerve-sheath sarcoma and loading her with antioxidants and herbs was about all there was to be done about it anyway. On a two-month prognosis she proceeded to live nearly a year -- two full years after I first said, "There's something wrong with this dog." If my dogs want to pick their own blackberries and selectively graze woodland herbs, I generally permit this.
